Here is what to read, what to watch and what to listen to by and about Anthony Bourdain. He left his mark in restaurant kitchens and libraries - both fiction and nonfiction - and redefined the genre of food-tourism shows. CNN, the network on which his TV show “Parts Unknown” aired, said that he killed himself in a hotel in France, where he was working on an episode. The chef, television host and author Anthony Bourdain was found dead on Friday at 61.

I hope you enjoy my postings and reviews and share my blog with friends. There will be no advertising since I'm not interested in making money, just sharing. All discussions will be related to books and reading. Here I will post reviews of books I have just finished reading and news items and articles of interest. At the urging of a number of friends, I decided to start a blog. I’ve been a book reviewer for a number of years and have posted hundreds of reviews on both Goodreads and LibraryThing. My focus is contemporary literary fiction (especially Canadian fiction) and mysteries. Schatje’s Shelves is my reading blog devoted primarily to reviews of the books I acquire for my library - a library which has 8,050+ books (print, ebooks, audiobooks) and keeps growing. Now that I'm retired, I have so much more time to read (and to enjoy the library my husband made for me). For 30 years, I was a high school English teacher/teacher-librarian. Ultimately Reacher and the FBI agents agree to join forces for their mutual interests and set up an elaborate staged kidnapping of Beck's son, Richard, hoping it will get Reacher into the elder Beck's good graces and then his confidence. In short order the FBI is rousting Reacher, wanting to know what his interest is in the shadowy and much sought after drug dealer they identify as Quinn, known to have ties to Beck. Shocked, he contacts a friend from the military and asks him to check the plates registered to the supposed dead man. At the same time, Reacher sees an old adversary (he thought long dead) walking the streets of Boston in broad daylight. She since disappeared and the agent running what amounts to a rogue operation doesn't know if her operative is dead of alive. A female FBI agent was placed at Beck's home posing as a maid, to get the goods on him after a previous investigation was compromised. Reacher is drawn into a complicated FBI undercover investigation that's been set up to expose Zachery Beck, an Oriental rug importer long suspected of bringing drugs into the US. Loner and ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is back in another action-packed and gritty thriller that grips you by the throat from page one. Faith itself is under attack, the path to the Sublime. The reason confounds everyone but it appears that it may concern their Book of Truth. The argument between the two ships results in the destruction of one, shortly followed by an attack on the high command of Gzlit. Like countless advanced civilisations before them, they are ready to abandon reality and take that final step into a dimension from which few have returned and little is known – except that it has eighteen different types of weather. The Gzilt are progressing through the final days of their countdown towards becoming Sublime. Two ships, or Minds, conduct a polite argument above the planetary fragment of Ablate, a territory belonging to the Gzilt civilisation. I had hopes, then, for The Hydrogen Sonata. I am still a novice in Culture-terms but I aspire to be experienced enough to know when Banks achieves greatness, as he did with Consider Phlebas and Use of Weapons. Peerless writing competes with exquisite humour as well as an imagination that quite frankly risks expanding one’s brain to such an extent there is a chance of it exploding within one’s head. Banks will always produce tingles of anticipatory pleasure. The prospect of a new Culture novel by Iain M. This is the story of a young Dick Grayson, newly orphaned, struggling to find his way in a strange, difficult, dark new world…This is the story of Robin and Batman. The legendary story of Batman and Robin has reached nearly mythic proportions: the crime-fighting Dynamic Duo, always one step ahead of the criminals they pursue and never meeting a case too big. It is a marriage of her choosing - after several refusals of other proposals, and fiery arguments with her uncle who raised her - to a man whom she loves. She has independence in a way most women of the time did not, but she still gets caught by the political and social mores of the time, (she must marry) and in the end succumbs. She also understands financial markets and asserts her economic power within her community, helping Robert Moore out financially with his Mill and creating a fund and distribution system for financial gifts to community members in need. She reads the newspaper, keeping herself informed on political and social issues. In the introduction to the Wordsworth edition that I read, Sally Minogue informs us that Brontë’s novel, Shirley, “is, according to The Oxford Dictionary of English Christian Names, the earliest usage of ‘Shirley’ as a first name, for man or woman”(XI).īased on her sister Emily Brontë (1818-1848) who died when Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) was writing the novel, the character of Shirley Keeldar is bold, outspoken, happy, willful and independently wealthy. Before this novel, published in 1849, between Jane Eyre and Villette, Shirley was only a man’s surname. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbour. Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. But when the war finally ends, instead of freedom, Odile is confronted by the consequences of her choices. Together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. Eventually the Nazis invade the City of Light and take it over. Odile has a dream job at the American Library in Paris, assisting people from all different countries. It is 1939, and Odile Souchet has just returned to Paris after completing library school. So many themes brought together in one book. Based on the true World War II story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, this is a powerful, and as we all agreed an unforgettable story of romance, friendship, jealousy, betrayal, family, and the power of literature. Harry is reluctant, equating it with crossing over to the dark side. In the meantime, Mickey wants him to investigate a murder while his usual investigator recuperates from a motorbike accident. He’s currently suing the department for forcing him out, hiring his half-brother, Mickey Haller, to pursue the case. It’s six months since the last Bosch novel and Harry has resigned after his suspension without pay at the end of the last book. The Crossing is another solid effort from Michael Connelly and even though Harry Bosch has now retired from the LAPD (yeah, we’ve heard that before), it still seems a bit same-same. Radar was invented for national defense and to remotely survey the earth and its atmosphere, but it also allows new collisions with "others." American radar was primarily developed at the Radiation Laboratory at MIT during the 1940s. Radar is presented as significant because of its progressive-catastrophic potential. Innis (1972 1951), Mumford (1970 1934), Carey (1988), Virilio (1997 1989 1986) and others are discussed as preparing an understanding of logistical media as subtle but powerful devices of cognitive, social, and political coordination that affect our experience of time and space. This study introduces logistical media and considers one example of such-radar. Initially I was so upset by the story that I couldn’t continue listening, and started listening to something else instead.
